The Twins

The twins were small
7 pounds—he said
looking down.
He was a big man
and they fit on his forearms
like footballs—
their tiny heads
in the palm of his hands
legs dangled
on either side of his elbows.

I wondered
if holding them like that
ever got old for him,
if his arms got tired,
if it still stirred
the same deep-down feelings
as it did the first time he held them.

I asked him
how he told them apart.
He grinned
said the only way
he could tell was
the color of the booties.
